Average Cost of Slate
Slate pricing depends heavily on whether you use full slabs or tiles, where the slate comes from and its grade. Imported slab slate can cost as much as mid-range or premium granite once freight and duty are added, while slate tiles are more economical.
Factors That Change the Price
Slab vs Tile
Slate tiles are cheaper and easier to transport, but they create grout lines on the counter that collect dirt. Full slabs look seamless and premium but cost more and are harder to source.
Location and Transport
Transport from the source to the supplier, and then to your site, adds cost — especially for heavy slabs going to upper floors or other cities.
Colour
Black and charcoal grey are the most common slate colours. Green, purple and red varieties are rarer and more expensive.
Grade and Quality
Higher grades are denser, more consistent in colour and less likely to flake along their natural layers. Lower grades are cheaper but may shed thin layers over time.
Availability
Because slate is not widely stocked in Pakistan for countertops, limited supply can raise prices and lead times.
Fabrication
Slate is softer than granite and can be easier to cut, but its layered structure requires careful handling to avoid chipping.
Ongoing Costs
Slate benefits from sealing in kitchens, and some owners oil it periodically for a richer colour. Scratches are easy to soften but more common than on granite.
Alternatives in Pakistan
If you love the slate look, consider:
- Leather-finish black granite such as Galaxy Black, Black Pearl or Impala Black — a matte, textured dark surface with far greater hardness.
- Honed black granite for a smooth, non-reflective finish.
- Matte dark quartz such as Charcoal Grey or Antique Black — non-porous and no sealing.
These are readily available at FB Marble and often more economical than imported slate.
