What Is Travertine?
Travertine is a form of limestone created by mineral springs. As calcium-rich water flows and evaporates, layers of calcium carbonate build up, trapping gas bubbles that leave natural holes. The result is a layered, textured stone with a warm, earthy appearance.

The Best Types of Travertine
Classic Cream and Beige Travertine

The most popular type — warm, versatile and timeless. It suits floors, walls and bathrooms in almost any style.
Ivory Travertine
A lighter, softer tone that brightens rooms and pairs well with white walls and modern furniture.
Silver Travertine
Grey and silver tones for contemporary interiors. It pairs beautifully with white, black and chrome.
Giallo and Yellow Travertine
Golden tones that bring sunshine into Mediterranean-style homes and courtyards.
Walnut and Noce Travertine
Rich brown shades for warm, cosy interiors and traditional homes.
Red and Rosso Travertine
Rarer warm reds for distinctive feature walls.
Finishes
- Filled: holes are filled with resin or cement for a smooth, easy-clean surface.
- Unfilled: natural holes remain for a rustic look.
- Honed: smooth and matte.
- Polished: glossy, best on filled travertine.
- Tumbled: softened, aged edges for a rustic, slip-resistant feel.
- Brushed: gently textured.
Cut Types
Vein cut shows linear bands of colour; cross cut shows cloudy, flowing patterns.
Where to Use Travertine
- Lounge and corridor floors
- Bathroom walls and floors
- Feature walls and fireplace surrounds
- Staircases
- Outdoor patios and pool surrounds (tumbled or brushed)
Care
Travertine is porous and reacts to acids. Seal it regularly and clean with pH-neutral products. Filled travertine is easier to maintain in kitchens and bathrooms.
