Practical note: Vein-cut stone is sawn parallel to the bedding layers, which gives straight stripes; lay all pieces with the stripes running the same way. A honed (matte) finish is less slippery than polished and hides scratches and etch marks better. Clean with pH-neutral stone soap; on unfilled or tumbled stone, sweep grit regularly so the open pores do not trap dirt.
