What Is Travertine Used For?
Travertine is used for floors, wall cladding, bathrooms, shower walls, staircases, fireplace surrounds, outdoor patios, pool surrounds and building façades.

What Is Travertine?
Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs. As calcium-rich water flows and evaporates, layers of calcium carbonate build up. Gas bubbles trapped during formation leave the stone's characteristic holes and pores.

Travertine vs Limestone
Both are calcium carbonate sedimentary stones. Travertine forms specifically from spring deposits, giving it a layered, porous texture with natural holes. Limestone forms from marine organisms and sediments and is usually more uniform.
Colours
Ivory, cream, beige, gold, walnut, noce (dark brown), silver and red.
Finishes
- Filled: holes filled with resin or cement for a smooth surface.
- Unfilled: natural holes left open for a rustic look.
- Honed: smooth matte.
- Polished: glossy, on filled travertine.
- Tumbled: softened edges and aged texture.
- Brushed: gently textured.
Cuts
Vein cut: linear bands. Cross cut: cloudy, flowing patterns.
Where Should You Install Travertine?
Countertops
Possible but not ideal — travertine is soft, porous and acid-sensitive.
Backsplashes
A popular choice for warm, textured kitchens. Seal well behind the stove.
Fireplace Surrounds
Warm and natural.
Floors
Elegant and timeless; honed or tumbled for grip.
Bathrooms
A classic spa-like choice for walls and floors.
Outdoors
Tumbled and brushed travertine stays cool underfoot around pools and patios.
Care
Seal regularly, clean with pH-neutral products, wipe acidic spills and keep unfilled holes clean.
