Is Granite a Porous Material?
Yes, slightly. Granite is made of interlocking crystals, and between those crystals are microscopic spaces. These allow small amounts of liquid to penetrate if the stone is unsealed. However, granite's porosity is generally low โ much lower than marble, limestone or travertine.
Does Porosity Vary Between Granites?
Yes, significantly:
- Dark, dense granites such as Galaxy Black, Black Pearl and Uba Tuba have very low absorption and may rarely need sealing.
- Light granites such as Kashmir White, Snow White and Deer White tend to be more absorbent and need regular sealing.
- Granites with large crystals can absorb more along crystal boundaries.
How Can You Protect Your Granite?
- Seal it. A penetrating sealer fills the pores and makes liquids bead on the surface.
- Wipe spills quickly, especially oil, haldi, chai and juices.
- Use trays under oil bottles and spice jars.
- Clean with pH-neutral products that do not strip the sealer.
- Test periodically with the water-drop test.

How Porous Is Granite Compared with Marble?
| Stone | Relative Porosity | Sealing Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Dark granite | Very low | Rarely |
| Light granite | Low | About yearly |
| Marble | Moderate | Every 6โ12 months |
| Travertine | High | Regularly |
| Quartz | Practically none | Never |

Marble is more porous and also reacts to acids, which granite does not.
How Can You Tell if Your Granite Needs Resealing?
The water-drop test: place a few drops of water on the counter and wait 10โ15 minutes.
- If the water beads and the stone stays the same colour, the sealer is working.
- If the stone darkens under the water, it is absorbing and needs resealing.
Other signs include dark rings around the sink, oil stains near the stove and stains that appear more easily than before.
