Raw Granite: What Should I Know?

Before granite becomes a polished countertop, staircase or floor, it is raw rock in a quarry. Understanding the journey from raw granite to finished stone helps you appreciate why each slab is unique — and what to look for when buying.

How Does Raw Granite Form?

Granite forms when magma cools slowly deep beneath the earth's surface. Over thousands to millions of years, crystals of quartz, feldspar, mica and other minerals grow and interlock. Geological uplift and erosion later expose these granite bodies at the surface, where they can be quarried.

What Does Raw Granite Look Like?

Raw granite at the quarry is rough, unpolished and often weathered on the outside. Its true colours and patterns only become visible once it is cut and polished. Quarry workers cut test pieces to judge the quality of a deposit.

What Happens When Granite Leaves the Quarry?

  1. Block extraction: large blocks are separated with diamond wire saws or controlled splitting.
  2. Transport: blocks travel by truck — and by sea for imports — to processing plants.
  3. Slab cutting: gang saws or multi-wire saws slice blocks into slabs.
  4. Resin treatment: some slabs are treated to fill micro-fissures.
  5. Finishing: slabs are polished, honed, leathered or flamed.
  6. Distribution: slabs reach stone yards like FB Marble.
