Is Granite Extrusive or Intrusive? A Simple Geology Guide

Understanding how granite forms explains why it is so durable โ€” and why every slab looks different. One of the most common geology questions is whether granite is an extrusive or intrusive rock. Here is a simple explanation.

What Is Granite?

Granite is a coarse-grained igneous rock rich in quartz and feldspar. "Igneous" means it formed from molten rock (magma) that cooled and solidified.

What Do Extrusive and Intrusive Mean?

Igneous rocks are divided into two groups depending on where the magma cooled:

Extrusive rocks form when lava erupts onto the earth's surface and cools quickly in air or water. Fast cooling gives crystals little time to grow, producing fine-grained rocks such as basalt and pumice.

Intrusive rocks (also called plutonic rocks) form when magma cools slowly deep underground, insulated by surrounding rock. Slow cooling โ€” over thousands to millions of years โ€” allows large, visible crystals to grow.

So, Is Granite Extrusive or Intrusive?

Granite is intrusive. Its large, interlocking crystals are clear evidence of slow cooling deep within the earth's crust. Granite masses are later exposed at the surface through uplift and erosion โ€” which is why we can quarry them today.

The Minerals in Granite

  • Quartz: grey, clear or smoky; very hard.
  • Feldspar: white, cream, pink or red; often the dominant colour.
  • Mica: black (biotite) or silver (muscovite) flakes that sparkle.
  • Hornblende: dark green-black specks.
  • Garnet: occasional red-burgundy dots.

Why Intrusive Formation Makes Great Countertops

Slow cooling creates tightly interlocked crystals, giving granite its hardness, low porosity and heat resistance โ€” exactly the properties a busy kitchen needs.

Other Countertop Stones by Rock Type

  • Marble, quartzite, slate: metamorphic
  • Limestone, travertine, sandstone: sedimentary
  • Granite, basalt: igneous
