3. Its Name Comes from Latin

4. It Is Made of Several Minerals

Granite is mainly quartz and feldspar, with mica, hornblende and sometimes garnet. These minerals give each granite its colour and pattern.

5. It Is a Plutonic Rock

Granite cools slowly deep underground in large bodies called plutons. Slow cooling creates its large crystals.

6. It Is Extremely Hard

Granite rates about 6–7 on the Mohs scale — harder than steel knives — which is why it resists scratches so well.

7. It Handles Heat Superbly

Because it formed at extreme temperatures, granite easily tolerates hot pots and pans.

8. It Forms Much of the Continental Crust

Granite and similar rocks make up a large part of the Earth's continents.

9. Pakistan Has Its Own Granite

Granite outcrops occur in the Nagarparkar area of Sindh and in the northern mountains. Local granites such as Tropical Brown, Impala Black and Indus Gold are widely used across Pakistan.

10. No Two Slabs Are Identical

Each slab has a unique arrangement of crystals and colours.

11. Some Granites Contain Garnets

The small burgundy specks in stones like Kashmir White are often garnets.

12. Blue Granite Has a Special Mineral

The blue shimmer of Blue Pearl granite comes from labradorescent feldspar that reflects blue light.

13. Ancient Builders Loved Granite

Granite has been used for temples, monuments, columns and bridges for thousands of years because of its strength and longevity.

14. Granite Is Recyclable

Offcuts and old counters can be reused or crushed into aggregate for construction.

15. It Can Last for Generations

With minimal care, a granite countertop can outlast the house it is installed in.
