Travertine vs Granite: What's the Difference?

Travertine and granite are both natural stones, but they are suited to very different uses. Travertine brings warmth and texture to floors and walls; granite brings toughness to kitchens and outdoor areas. Here is how they compare.

Where Do They Come From?

Travertine is a form of limestone created by mineral-rich hot springs. As the water evaporates, calcium carbonate is deposited in layers, trapping gas bubbles that leave the stone's characteristic holes. FB Marble's travertine collection comes from Turkey and Italy.

Granite is an igneous rock formed from slowly cooled magma. FB Marble stocks both Pakistani and imported granites.

Appearance

Travertine comes in warm creams, beiges, walnut browns, golds and silvers, with natural holes, layers and a soft, earthy look. It is available filled or unfilled, in vein-cut or cross-cut patterns, and in honed, polished, tumbled or brushed finishes.

Granite has crystals, speckles and sometimes waves, in nearly every colour from black to blue.

Where Is Each Best Used?

Travertine: floors, walls, bathrooms, shower areas, stair cladding, outdoor patios and pool surrounds (tumbled or brushed).

Durability

Granite is much harder and more resistant to scratches, stains and heat. Travertine is softer, porous and reacts to acids, so it can etch and stain more easily.

Maintenance

Travertine needs regular sealing, pH-neutral cleaners and care with acidic spills. Unfilled travertine can collect dirt in its holes.

Granite needs periodic sealing for light colours and very little else.

Cost

Imported travertine is typically a premium material. Granite ranges from economical local stones (about Rs 250 per square foot in FB Marble's list) to premium imports.

What Is Granite Typically Used For?

Countertops, staircases, flooring, wall cladding, window sills, outdoor paving and monuments.

Which Should You Choose?

Use travertine for warm, textured floors and walls, especially in bathrooms and Mediterranean-style homes. Use granite for kitchens, stairs and anywhere durability matters most.
