What Is Formica-Type Laminate?
It is a high-pressure laminate made by pressing layers of resin-soaked kraft paper together with a decorative printed sheet and a protective top layer. The laminate sheet is then glued onto a particleboard or MDF core to make a countertop.
What Is Granite?
Granite is a natural igneous stone quarried in blocks, cut into slabs and polished. It is one of the hardest and most heat-resistant countertop materials.
Appearance
Laminates can imitate stone, wood or solid colours, but they look flat and repetitive up close. Granite has natural depth, crystals and variation that cannot be printed.
Cost
Laminate is cheaper upfront. However, Pakistani granite is very affordable — starting from about Rs 250 per square foot in FB Marble's list — and lasts many times longer.
Durability
Laminate chips at edges, scratches easily and can delaminate or swell if water seeps into joints. Granite withstands decades of heavy use.
Hardness
Granite rates about 6–7 on the Mohs scale; laminate is far softer and scratches from knives.
Heat Resistance
Laminate can blister, burn or melt under hot pots. Granite handles hot cookware with ease.
Water Resistance
Laminate's top surface resists water, but joints, edges and cut-outs are vulnerable. Granite is unaffected by water.
Repairs
Damaged laminate is difficult to repair invisibly and usually needs replacing. Granite chips can be filled and polished.
Resale Value
Granite adds value to a property; laminate does not.
Verdict
For any long-term home — especially with Pakistani cooking — granite is the better value. Laminate may suit temporary or very low-budget installations.
