How to Measure Countertops in 3 Easy Steps

Measuring your countertops yourself is the fastest way to get an accurate quotation. It takes just three steps and a few minutes. Final measurements are always confirmed by templating, but this gives FB Marble everything needed for a reliable quote.

What You'll Need

  • A steel measuring tape
  • Paper and pencil, or your phone
  • A calculator

Step 1: Sketch Your Layout

Draw your kitchen from above. Mark each counter section, walls, windows, the sink, hob, fridge and any island or peninsula. Number each section — 1, 2, 3 — so measurements are easy to match.

Step 1: Sketch with dimensions – how to measure countertops
Step 1: Sketch with dimensions

Step 2: Measure

For each section:

  • Length: measure along the wall, end to end.
  • Depth: measure from the wall to the front edge of the cabinet, then add about 1 inch for the overhang.
  • Backsplash: measure the length and desired height.
  • Island: measure length and depth, including any seating overhang.

Write every measurement on the sketch in inches.

Tip: in L-shaped kitchens, measure one leg to the wall and the other leg from the edge of the first leg's depth, so the corner is not counted twice.

Step 3: Calculate

For each section, multiply length × depth (in inches) and divide by 144 to get square feet. Add all sections together, add backsplash area, and add about 10% for wastage.

Example:

  • Section 1: 96 × 25 = 2,400 sq in ÷ 144 = 16.7 sq ft
  • Section 2: 60 × 25 = 1,500 sq in ÷ 144 = 10.4 sq ft
  • Backsplash: 156 × 4 = 624 sq in ÷ 144 = 4.3 sq ft
  • Total: 31.4 sq ft + 10% ≈ 34.5 sq ft

Odd-Shaped Projects

For curved islands, angled walls or unusual shapes:

  • Measure the longest length and widest depth to create a rectangle.
  • Take photos from several angles.
  • Note angles where possible.
  • Our team will template the exact shape on site.
