How to Prepare Your Cabinets for New Granite Countertops

A granite countertop is only as good as the base it sits on. Weak or uneven cabinets can lead to cracks, wobbling, open joints and gaps against the wall. Good preparation makes installation faster and protects your investment. Follow this checklist before the FB Marble installation team arrives.

1. Clear the Cabinets

Empty every drawer and cabinet, especially under the sink and in corners. Installers often need to reach inside to fix supports, apply adhesive and clamp joints. Clearing in advance saves time and protects your crockery.

2. Remove Old Countertops

If you are replacing an existing top, decide whether you or the installer will remove it. Removing it a day or two early lets you inspect the cabinet frames for water damage, termites or loose joints and fix them before the new stone goes on.

3. Level the Cabinets

Use a long spirit level across the front, back and sides of every cabinet run. Granite does not bend; a slab resting on uneven cabinets is under stress and can crack when weight is added. Adjust cabinet legs or add shims until everything is level within a couple of millimetres.

4. Add Supporting Material

Granite is heavy โ€” roughly 12 to 15 kg per square foot at 18โ€“20 mm thickness. Make sure cabinet side panels are strong and well fixed. Add plywood or steel supports for long spans, gaps where a dishwasher or washing machine will sit, and any overhang wider than about 25โ€“30 cm. Masonry (brick) counters must be flat, fully cured and free of loose plaster.

5. Remove Plumbing and Appliances

Disconnect the sink, taps and any built-in hob. Turn off gas and water supplies. Move fridges, ovens and microwaves away from the work area so installers have room to carry slabs safely.

6. Secure Cabinet Doors and Drawers

Remove or tape cabinet doors so they do not swing open and get scratched while heavy slabs are moved in.

7. Clear a Path

Make sure the route from the gate to the kitchen is clear. Slabs are carried on edge, so doorways, stair turns and corridors need space. Tell us in advance about lifts, narrow stairs or upper floors.

8. Be Present on Installation Day

Be at home to confirm the sink position, overhang, joint locations and backsplash height before adhesive is applied. Small decisions made on the day are much easier than changes afterwards.

After Installation

Avoid heavy use for about 24 hours while adhesives cure. Do not stand on the counter, and wait for the plumber to reconnect the sink properly with silicone.
