Before You Polish
- Clear the counter. Remove all items.
- Clean thoroughly. Use warm soapy water to remove grease and residue; rinse and dry.
- Remove stains. Treat any stains with poultices first — polishing will not remove stains.
- Check for sealer haze. If the surface is cloudy from old sealer, remove it with a little fresh sealer and wipe off immediately.
- Let it dry completely.

How to Polish Granite
Option 1: Granite Polish Products
- Spray or apply a granite polish evenly.
- Spread it in small circles with a soft microfibre cloth.
- Buff with a clean, dry cloth until glossy.
This adds a light protective layer and enhances shine — ideal for regular maintenance.
Option 2: Polishing Powder or Compound
For dull areas:
- Sprinkle a small amount of granite polishing powder.
- Add a few drops of water to make a paste.
- Rub with a felt pad or buffing pad in circular motions.
- Rinse and dry.
What Is Dry Polishing?
Dry polishing uses resin-bonded diamond pads on a variable-speed polisher without water. It is convenient indoors because there is no water mess, but it creates dust and heat, so it requires skill and good ventilation.
What Is Wet Polishing?
Wet polishing uses water to cool the pads and capture dust. It generally gives a better finish and extends pad life, but it is messier. Professionals often prefer wet polishing for countertops.
Tips
- Work in small sections.
- Use low speed with machines to avoid overheating.
- Keep pads flat to avoid uneven spots.
- Progress through grits gradually (if using diamond pads).
- Reseal after polishing.
When to Call a Professional
- Deep scratches or widespread dullness
- Large areas or entire kitchens
- Dark granites where uneven polishing would show
- Seams that need refilling
