What Are Quartz Surfaces?
Quartz countertops are engineered slabs made from roughly 90–93% crushed natural quartz — one of the hardest minerals on Earth — mixed with polymer resin and pigments. The mixture is compacted under vacuum and vibration, cured with heat and polished.
So quartz contains natural stone, but the slab itself is manufactured. That is why it is often called "engineered stone".
How Is It Different from Natural Stone?
Natural stones such as granite, marble and quartzite are cut directly from quarried blocks. Every slab is unique. Quartz is designed and produced, so colours and patterns are controlled and consistent.
Pros of Quartz Countertops
- Non-porous: resists stains from oil, haldi and chai.
- No sealing: ever.
- Consistent colours across multiple slabs.
- Scratch-resistant for everyday use.
- Wide design range, including convincing marble-looks.
- Hygienic because there are no open pores.

Cons of Quartz Countertops
- Heat sensitivity: resin can scorch under direct high heat.
- Not for outdoor use: UV can fade or yellow it.
- Visible joints on long runs, as with any slab.
- Less unique than natural stone.
How to Care for Quartz
Clean with warm soapy water, use trivets for hot cookware, cut on boards and avoid harsh chemicals such as bleach and oven cleaner.
How Much Does Quartz Cost?
Quartz ranges from mid to premium depending on design and brand. Plain colours are most affordable; marble-look and bookmatched designs cost more. FB Marble provides current rates on request.
How Does Quartz Compare with Other Man-Made Materials?
- Solid surface (acrylic): softer, scratches more easily, poor heat resistance, but seamless joints.
- Laminate: much cheaper, far less durable.
- Porcelain slabs: excellent heat and UV resistance, thinner and more brittle at edges.
- Cultured marble: resin-based, mainly for vanities, less durable.
