Two Types of Paint
Oil-Based Paint (Enamel)
Durable and solvent-based, often used on doors, grills and cabinets. It needs a mild solvent such as mineral spirits for removal.
Water-Based Paint (Emulsion and Acrylic)
The most common wall paint in Pakistani homes. When fresh, it comes off with water; when dry, it can usually be softened and lifted.
Removing Wet Paint
Act immediately. For water-based paint, wipe with a damp cloth and then soapy water. For oil-based paint, wipe with a cloth lightly dampened with mineral spirits, then wash the area with soap and water to remove any residue. Dry the surface.
Removing Dry Paint
1. Soften with Warm Soapy Water

Lay a warm, soapy cloth over the paint for several minutes. This softens water-based paint and loosens its grip on the surface.
2. Use a Scraper
Hold a plastic scraper โ or a new razor blade almost flat against the surface โ and gently push under the edge of the paint to lift it. Never hold the blade at a steep angle or dig into the surface.
3. Mild Solvent for Stubborn Paint
For dried oil-based paint, apply a little mineral spirits to a cloth and rub gently. Rinse immediately with soapy water.
4. Finish
Clean the area with warm soapy water, rinse and buff dry.
What Not to Use
- Paint strippers containing methylene chloride
- Strong alkaline removers
- Abrasive pads and steel wool
- Leaving any solvent on the surface for a long time
These can damage the resin and leave permanent dull patches.
Prevention
Before painting, cover counters with cardboard and plastic sheets taped at the edges. Ask painters to keep paint tins on trays, not directly on the stone.
What About Granite and Marble?
The same gentle steps work on granite. On marble, avoid solvents where possible and test any product on a hidden area. Reseal natural stone after using solvents.
