How to Remove Stains from Quartzite Countertops

Quartzite is one of the hardest natural stones you can put in a kitchen, but it is still a natural stone with pores. That means it can stain if it is not sealed and cared for properly. The good news is that most stains can be removed with simple household materials. Here is how staining happens and how to fix it.

How Is Quartzite Made?

Quartzite starts life as sandstone. Over millions of years, heat and pressure deep in the earth fuse the quartz grains together into a dense, crystalline rock. The fusion is not perfect, though — tiny gaps remain between the crystals, and those gaps can absorb liquids.

How Does Quartzite Stain?

When oil, coffee, chai, haldi, fruit juice or coloured sauces sit on unsealed quartzite, they slowly wick into the pores and leave a darker or coloured patch. Light-coloured quartzites show stains more clearly, but all quartzite benefits from protection.

Sealing Quartzite

A penetrating (impregnating) sealer soaks into the pores and makes them repel liquids. It does not change the look of the stone and is invisible once cured.

How long does sealing last? Usually one to two years on kitchen counters, and longer on walls or low-use surfaces.

When should it be sealed? Right after installation, and whenever the stone fails the water test. To test, place a few drops of water on the surface for ten minutes. If the stone darkens under the water, it is time to reseal.

Removing Stains from Quartzite

General cleaning. For daily use, wipe with warm water and a mild dish soap, rinse and dry. This removes most fresh spills before they become stains.

Oil and grease stains. Make a poultice of baking soda and water, or use acetone on a cloth for dark stones. The powder draws the oil out as it dries.

Organic stains (tea, coffee, haldi, fruit). Mix baking soda with 6% hydrogen peroxide into a paste. This works especially well on light quartzite.

Water rings. Allow the area to dry fully — most water marks fade on their own as moisture evaporates.

Rust. Use a rust remover that is labelled safe for natural stone.

How to Apply a Poultice

  1. Clean the area and let it dry.
  2. Spread the poultice about 5 mm thick, extending slightly past the stain.
  3. Cover with plastic wrap and tape the edges; poke a few small holes.
  4. Leave for 24–48 hours until the paste dries completely.
  5. Scrape it off with a plastic spatula, rinse and dry.
  6. Repeat if the stain is lighter but not gone.
  7. Reseal once the stain is removed.

Prevention Tips

  • Use coasters under glasses and trays under oil bottles.
  • Wipe haldi and chai spills immediately.
  • Reseal on schedule.
  • Clean with pH-neutral products that do not strip the sealer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use vinegar on quartzite?

It tolerates mild acids better than marble, but neutral cleaners protect the sealer longer.

Do dark quartzites stain?

Less visibly, but they still need sealing.

Can stains become permanent?

Rarely, if treated promptly and the stone is kept sealed.
