Is White Granite Hard to Clean?
Not really. Daily care is the same as for any granite: warm water, mild soap, rinse and dry. The difference is that marks are more visible on a light background, so quick cleaning and good sealing matter more.
How Do Stains Form?
Granite is made of interlocking crystals with microscopic gaps between them. When the protective sealer wears thin, liquids like oil, chai, haldi and juice can seep into those gaps and leave a darker or yellowish patch.
Common Stains on White Granite
- Oil and ghee: dark, wet-looking patches near the stove
- Haldi, tea and coffee: yellow or brown marks
- Water: dark patches that usually fade once dry
- Rust: orange spots under tins and metal racks
- Ink and markers: from homework at the counter

Materials You Will Need
- Mild dish soap
- Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
- Baking soda
- 6% hydrogen peroxide (for organic stains)
- Soft cloths, plastic wrap and tape

Method 1: Mild Dish Soap and Warm Water
For fresh spills and general cleaning, this is all you need. Wipe the area, rinse with clean water and dry. Many fresh marks disappear completely.
Method 2: Rubbing Alcohol and Warm Water
Mix equal parts alcohol and water in a spray bottle. Spray the stain, leave it for a minute and wipe. Alcohol cuts grease and disinfects without harming granite.
Method 3: Baking Soda Poultice
For stains that have soaked in, mix baking soda with water into a thick paste. Spread it about 5 mm thick over the stain, cover with plastic wrap, tape the edges and leave it for 24 hours. Remove, rinse and repeat if needed. For organic stains like haldi or tea, use hydrogen peroxide instead of water in the paste.
Seal After Cleaning
Once the stain is gone and the stone is completely dry, apply a quality granite sealer. Light granites should be sealed after installation and at least once a year. Test with a few drops of water — if the stone darkens within ten minutes, it is time to reseal.
What to Avoid
Vinegar, lemon, bleach and abrasive powders weaken the sealer and may dull the polish, making future staining more likely.
