What Types of Water Stains Are There?
Dark Water Marks (Absorption)
When water soaks into unsealed or under-sealed granite, the stone darkens as if it is wet. This is common around sinks and on light granites like Kashmir White.
White Rings and Spots (Mineral Deposits)
Hard water contains calcium and magnesium. When it evaporates, it leaves white chalky deposits, especially around taps and under glasses. These are more visible on dark granites.
How to Remove Dark Water Marks
- Let it dry. Most dark marks fade completely as the water evaporates — give it 24 hours.
- Speed up drying. Point a fan at the area or place a dry cloth over it.
- Use a poultice for stubborn marks. A baking soda and water paste under plastic wrap for 24 hours can draw moisture and minerals out.
- Reseal. Once dry, apply a penetrating sealer to stop it happening again.

If a dark mark never disappears, water may be entering from below — check for a leaking pipe or sink.
How to Remove White Mineral Deposits
- Wash with warm soapy water and dry.
- Use a plastic scraper on crusty deposits.
- Buff gently with #0000 steel wool on dry, polished granite (test first).
- Use a stone-safe hard water remover for heavy build-up.
What to Avoid
- Vinegar and lemon
- Limescale descalers and toilet cleaners
- Abrasive powders
- Wire brushes
How to Protect Granite from Water Stains
- Seal regularly, especially light granites and the area around the sink.
- Dry the counter after cleaning and after washing dishes.
- Use coasters under glasses and water bottles.
- Fix leaking taps and check under-sink plumbing.
- Re-caulk the joint around the sink when it cracks.
- Consider a water softener in hard-water areas.
