What Are Hard Water Stains?
Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium. When water evaporates on the counter, these minerals are left behind as a white or chalky deposit.
What Do They Look Like?
On granite, hard water stains appear as:
- White rings under glasses and jugs
- Crusty build-up around taps and soap dispensers
- Cloudy patches beside the sink
- White spots after cleaning if the counter was not dried
They are especially visible on dark granites like Galaxy Black and Black Pearl.
How to Clean Hard Water Stains on Granite
1. Wash with warm soapy water. Light deposits often dissolve with regular cleaning.

2. Use a plastic scraper. For crusty build-up, gently lift deposits with a plastic scraper or old credit card.
3. Baking soda paste. Apply a paste of baking soda and water, rub gently with a soft cloth and rinse.
4. Fine steel wool on polished granite. Very fine (#0000) steel wool used gently on dry, polished granite can lift mineral deposits without scratching. Test on a hidden area first.
5. Stone-safe hard water removers. Commercial products formulated for natural stone dissolve mineral deposits without harming the sealer.
What Should You Avoid?
- Vinegar and lemon — popular for hard water, but they weaken the sealer
- Limescale descalers and toilet cleaners
- Abrasive powders
- Wire brushes
How to Prevent Hard Water Stains
- Dry the counter after cleaning and around the sink after use
- Fix dripping taps
- Keep a small towel near the sink
- Use coasters under glasses
- Install a water softener or filter if your water is very hard
- Reseal granite regularly so minerals cannot penetrate
After Cleaning
Once the deposits are removed, check the sealer with a water-drop test and reseal if needed.
