How to Repair Cracks in Granite

Discovering a crack in your granite countertop is worrying, but many cracks can be repaired effectively. The key is assessing the damage correctly and using the right method. Here is a step-by-step guide.

How to Assess the Damage

Look closely at the line:

  • Does your fingernail catch on it? A crack usually catches; a natural fissure is smooth.
  • Are the two sides level? If one side is higher, the slab may have moved.
  • Is it growing? Mark the ends with a pencil and check over a few weeks.
  • Where is it? Cracks often start at sink cut-outs, hob cut-outs and seams.

What Is the Difference Between a Crack and a Fissure?

A fissure is a natural feature — a mineral boundary or healed fracture that formed with the stone. It does not weaken the slab significantly.

A crack is a separation caused by stress, impact, poor support, settlement or thermal shock.

How Do I Know If I Should Repair the Crack?

Repair is recommended if:

  • The crack is visible and catches dirt
  • Water can seep in
  • The crack is near a sink or hob
  • You want to prevent it spreading

If the slab is moving or the crack is wide and growing, the underlying support must be fixed first — call a professional.

Step 3: Filling crack
  • Clear or colour-matched epoxy
  • Granite dust (from an offcut) or tint
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Masking tape
  • A razor blade

Step 1: Collect Granite Dust

If you have an offcut of the same granite, gently grind or sand it to collect fine dust. This helps colour-match the repair.

Step 2: Clean the Crack

Clean with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely.

Step 3: Tape the Area

Apply masking tape on both sides to protect the surface.

Step 4: Mix the Epoxy

Mix epoxy and hardener, then add granite dust or tint to match the colour.

Step 5: Fill the Crack

Work the epoxy into the crack with a thin blade, slightly overfilling.

Step 6: Cure

Allow it to cure as directed.

Step 7: Scrape and Polish

Remove the tape, scrape the excess flush with a razor blade held flat, and polish with fine pads.

Step 8: Seal

Reseal the area.
