The Traits of Granite
- Appearance: visible crystals and speckles; sometimes waves. Often has a sparkle from mica and feldspar.
- Hardness: 6–7 on the Mohs scale — resists scratching from a steel knife.
- Acid resistance: does not react to lemon or vinegar.
- Heat: excellent resistance.
- Porosity: low, especially in dark stones.
- Feel: cold and hard.
The Traits of Marble
- Appearance: smooth veining, clouds and translucence; fewer distinct crystals.
- Hardness: about 3 on the Mohs scale — scratches easily.
- Acid sensitivity: etches with lemon and vinegar.
- Heat: good resistance.
- Porosity: moderate.
- Feel: smooth and cool.
Simple Tests
1. The Look Test

Granite usually shows a granular, speckled pattern with distinct mineral grains. Marble usually shows flowing veins on a more uniform background.
2. The Scratch Test
On a hidden spot or sample, try scratching with a steel knife. Granite resists; marble scratches.
3. The Acid Test
Place a drop of lemon juice or vinegar on a hidden area for a few minutes, then wipe. Marble will show a dull etch mark; granite will not.
4. The Glass Test
Granite can scratch glass because of its quartz content; marble cannot.
5. The Sparkle Test
Granite often sparkles under light; marble rarely does.
Why It Matters
Granite and marble need different care. Using vinegar-based cleaners on marble causes etching; assuming marble is as tough as granite leads to scratches and stains in kitchens.
