Things That Should Never Happen on Your Stone Countertop

Stone countertops are durable, but certain habits can damage even the toughest granite or quartz. Avoiding these common mistakes will keep your kitchen looking new for decades.

Never Stand or Sit on the Counter

It is tempting to stand on the counter to reach high cabinets or fans, or to sit on the edge of an island. But stone is rigid — concentrated weight can crack it, especially near sink cut-outs, seams and overhangs. Use a step stool instead.

Never Cut Directly on the Stone

Granite and quartz will blunt your knives quickly, and marble will scratch. Always use a chopping board.

Never Place Very Hot Pans Directly on Quartz

Quartz resin can scorch and crack from thermal shock. Even with granite, use trivets near seams and cut-outs.

Never Use Harsh or Acidic Cleaners

Vinegar, lemon, bleach, bathroom acids and abrasive powders damage sealers, etch marble and dull quartz. Use mild soap or pH-neutral stone cleaners.

Never Drag Heavy Appliances

Dragging mixers, microwaves, atta machines or water dispensers can scratch the surface. Lift them instead, and use felt pads.

Never Leave Spills Sitting

Oil, haldi, chai, achaar and juice can stain porous stones if left. Wipe spills immediately, especially on marble and light granite.

Never Leave Wet Metal Tins on Stone

They leave rust rings. Use trays.

Never Ignore Sealing

Light granites, marble and travertine need regular sealing. Do the water-drop test periodically.

Never Use the Counter as a Phone Booth for Calls Near Water

It sounds odd, but placing phones, chargers and electronics near sinks risks water damage — and dropped devices can chip edges.

Never Hammer or Drill Without Advice

Drilling holes for taps or accessories requires diamond bits and water cooling. Call your fabricator.

Never Use Stone as a Cutting or Pounding Base

Pounding garlic, spices or meat with heavy tools on the counter can chip or crack it. Use a proper board or mortar.

Never Let Water Pool Around the Sink

Standing water can seep into seams and under the counter, damaging cabinets. Dry the area and maintain the caulk.
