Granite Countertop Restoration Guide: Make It Look New Again

Granite is built to last, but after years of daily cooking it can look tired — dull patches, stubborn stains, small chips and worn sealer. Before you think about replacing it, consider restoration. In most cases, granite can be brought back to near-new condition at a fraction of the cost of new stone.

How Can You Restore a Granite Countertop?

Restoration usually involves four steps: deep cleaning and stain removal, chip and crack repair, polishing, and resealing. Depending on the condition, some steps can be done at home and others need a professional.

Step 1: Polishing granite with machine – granite countertop restoration

Step 2: Filling chip with epoxy – granite countertop restoration
Step 2: Filling chip with epoxy
Step 3: Applying sealer – granite countertop restoration
Step 3: Applying sealer

Step 1: Deep Clean

Clean thoroughly with warm water and a degreasing dish soap, paying special attention to the stove area where oil builds up. Rinse twice and let the stone dry completely.

Step 2: Remove Stains

  • Oil stains: baking soda and water poultice, 24–48 hours.
  • Organic stains (tea, haldi, coffee): baking soda and hydrogen peroxide poultice.
  • Rust: a stone-safe rust remover.
  • Hard water: stone-safe hard-water remover or gentle buffing.

Repeat poultices if necessary.

Step 3: Fix Chips and Cracks

Small chips can be filled with a colour-matched epoxy kit, scraped flush and polished. Hairline cracks can be stabilised with penetrating resin. Large cracks, broken corners and seam failures should be handled by professionals.

Step 4: Polish

For dull areas, granite polishing compounds and soft pads restore some shine. For a full restoration, professionals use diamond polishing pads with machines, working through grits to bring back the factory gloss.

Step 5: Reseal

Once the stone is clean, repaired and polished, apply a penetrating sealer to protect it. Let it cure for 24–48 hours.

What Other Options Are There?

  • Re-polishing seams: if old seams have darkened, they can be cleaned out and refilled.
  • Changing the finish: polished granite can be honed or leathered for a fresh look.
  • Partial replacement: a badly damaged section can sometimes be replaced with matching stone.

Keeping Granite in Good Shape After Restoration

  • Clean daily with mild soap and dry
  • Avoid vinegar, bleach and abrasive powders
  • Use trivets near seams and cut-outs
  • Reseal light granites yearly
  • Use cutting boards

When Is Restoration Not Enough?

If the slab is structurally cracked in several places, badly stained throughout or no longer fits a new layout, replacement may be better.
