Granite Maintenance: Best Tips for Natural Stone Care

Granite is one of the lowest-maintenance natural stones, but it is not maintenance-free. A few simple habits and a yearly check keep it looking new for decades. Here is a complete maintenance guide.

Daily Maintenance

  1. Wipe crumbs and spills after each meal.
  2. Clean with warm water and mild dish soap.
  3. Rinse to remove soap film.
  4. Dry and buff with a microfibre cloth.

Weekly Maintenance

Use a pH-neutral granite cleaner across the whole counter, paying attention to the cooking area and around the sink.

What Is Sealing and Why Is It Necessary?

Granite has microscopic pores between its crystals. A penetrating sealer fills these pores so that oil, haldi, chai and water bead on the surface instead of soaking in. Sealing gives you time to wipe spills before they stain.

How Do You Seal Granite?

  1. Clean the counter and let it dry for 24 hours.
  2. Apply a penetrating sealer evenly with a lint-free cloth.
  3. Allow it to soak in for the time on the label.
  4. Wipe off all excess before it dries.
  5. Let it cure for 24–48 hours before normal use.

How Often Should Granite Be Sealed?

  • Light granites (Kashmir White, Snow White, Deer White): about once a year in kitchens.
  • Medium granites: every one to two years.
  • Dark, dense granites (Galaxy Black, Black Pearl): rarely — test first.
  • Floors and walls: less often than kitchen counters.

How Do You Know It's Time to Reseal?

Do the water-drop test. Place a few drops of water on the counter and wait 10–15 minutes. If the stone darkens beneath the water, it needs resealing. Other signs include dark rings around the sink and stains appearing more easily.

Which Sealer Works Best?

Choose a penetrating (impregnating) sealer designed for natural stone. For dense dark granites, use a product formulated for low-porosity stone.
