Does Quartzite Need Sealing?
Yes. Quartzite is very hard, but it still has microscopic pores between its crystals. Without sealing, oil, chai, haldi and coloured juices can seep in and leave marks.
What Happens If You Don't Seal It?
Unsealed quartzite can develop dark oil patches near the stove, rings under glasses and yellow marks from spices. These can often be removed with poultices, but prevention is far easier.
Choosing a Sealer
Buy a penetrating (impregnating) sealer designed for natural stone. For dense stones like quartzite and dark granite, choose a product labelled for low-porosity surfaces โ it has finer molecules that penetrate better. Avoid topical coatings that sit on the surface.
Applying the Sealer
- Clean the counter with mild soap and water.
- Let it dry completely โ at least 24 hours, longer in humid weather.
- Apply the sealer evenly with a lint-free cloth or foam brush.
- Leave it to soak in for 10โ15 minutes (check the label), keeping the surface wet.
- Wipe off all excess with a clean dry cloth before it becomes tacky.
- Apply a second coat if the manufacturer recommends it.
How Long to Wait
- Light use (dry items only): after about 1โ2 hours.
- Normal use with liquids: after 24 hours.
- Full cure: 48โ72 hours, depending on the product and humidity.

During the cure period, avoid placing wet items on the counter, cleaning with water or using any cleaning products. Humid monsoon weather can slow curing, so allow extra time.
How to Test the Seal
After curing, place a few drops of water on the surface. If they bead up and the stone does not darken after 10โ15 minutes, the seal is working.
