How Is Granite Quarried? From Mountain to Countertop

Every granite countertop begins as part of a mountain or rock formation that took millions of years to form. Ever wondered how that rock becomes the polished surface in your kitchen? Here is the journey from quarry to countertop.

Step 1: Finding the Deposit

Geologists and quarry owners study rock formations to find granite deposits with attractive colour, consistent quality and few cracks. Test blocks are cut and polished to evaluate the stone before full-scale quarrying begins.

Step 2: Extracting the Blocks

Workers drill rows of holes into the rock and use diamond wire saws, controlled splitting or carefully managed methods to separate large blocks from the bedrock. Blocks can weigh twenty tonnes or more. Modern diamond-wire cutting reduces waste and produces cleaner, larger blocks than older methods.

Step 3: Transporting the Blocks

Cranes and heavy loaders lift the blocks onto trucks, which carry them to processing plants. Imported granite travels by sea in containers or as raw blocks.

Step 4: Cutting Blocks into Slabs

At the processing plant, gang saws or multi-wire saws slice each block into slabs of standard thickness — commonly 18, 20 or 30 mm. This can take many hours per block.

Step 5: Resin Treatment and Polishing

Some slabs are treated with resin to fill natural micro-fissures and strengthen the surface. Slabs then pass through polishing lines with progressively finer abrasive heads to achieve a polished, honed, leathered or flamed finish.

Step 6: Selection at the Stone Yard

Finished slabs are shipped to suppliers like FB Marble. You visit the yard, view full slabs and choose the ones for your project.

Step 7: Templating

Our team measures your kitchen precisely, recording cabinet sizes, wall angles, sink and hob positions.

Step 8: Fabrication

Bridge saws and CNC machines cut the slab to shape. Edges are profiled and polished, and cut-outs are made for sinks and hobs.

Local granite is quarried in regions such as Nagarparkar in Sindh and the northern mountains. FB Marble also imports from India, Brazil, Norway, Finland and Ukraine.
