Honed Granite Cost: A Buyer's Guide

Honed granite has a smooth, matte finish instead of a mirror-like polish. It gives kitchens and floors a soft, natural, contemporary look and reduces glare under strong lighting. If you are considering a honed finish, here is what it costs and what to expect.

What Is Granite?

Granite is a hard igneous stone made of quartz, feldspar and mica crystals. It is one of the most durable natural surfaces available, which makes it ideal for kitchens, stairs and outdoor areas.

What Is Honed Granite?

After a granite slab is cut, it is ground smooth with abrasive pads. For a polished finish, the process continues to very fine pads that create a reflective shine. For a honed finish, the process stops earlier, leaving a smooth surface with a satin or matte appearance.

How Much Does Honed Granite Cost?

In many cases, honed granite is priced similarly to polished. For some stones, honing is an extra process — particularly when a slab is re-processed from polished stock — and may add a small premium. The biggest factor in price remains the stone itself. In FB Marble's current list, granite ranges from about Rs 250 to Rs 5,000 per square foot.

Factors That Affect the Cost

Rarity

Rare colours such as blue and exotic patterns cost more regardless of finish.

Origin

Local Pakistani granites are more economical than imported stones from India, Brazil or Norway.

Availability

If a stone is available pre-honed, the price is usually lower than custom honing.

Thickness and Fabrication

Edges, cut-outs and installation affect the total as with any granite.

Pros of Honed Granite

  • Modern matte look that suits contemporary and rustic designs
  • Hides minor scratches better than polished surfaces
  • Less glare under strong kitchen lights and sunlight
  • Better grip on floors and stairs, especially when wet

Cons of Honed Granite

  • Shows oil marks more because the matte surface has slightly more open texture
  • May need more frequent sealing
  • Colours look lighter than on polished granite — black becomes charcoal
  • Fingerprints and water marks can be more visible on dark honed stone

Best Stones for a Honed Finish

Dark granites such as Galaxy Black and Black Pearl look sophisticated when honed. Grey granites like Silver Pearl also work well.
