Before You Start
- Ensure the countertop is installed and the stone is protected with tape and cardboard.
- Choose tiles, adhesive, grout and spacers.
- Plan the layout so cut tiles are at the edges, not the centre.
Step 1: Clean and Prep the Wall
Turn off power to wall sockets and remove socket covers. Clean the wall to remove grease and dust. Repair holes and ensure the wall is flat and dry. Painted walls may need roughening for better adhesion.
Step 2: Plan and Mark the Layout
Find the centre of the main wall section, especially behind the stove, and mark a level reference line. Dry-lay a row of tiles to check spacing.
Step 3: Apply the Mastic or Thinset Mortar
Spread tile adhesive (thinset or mastic, as recommended for your tiles) on a small area with a notched trowel, holding it at a 45-degree angle to create even ridges.

Step 4: Set the Tiles
Press tiles firmly into the adhesive with a slight twist. Use spacers for consistent gaps. Leave a small gap (about 3 mm) between the bottom row and the countertop for caulking. Check level frequently.
Step 5: Cut Tiles
Cut tiles to fit around sockets, windows and edges using a tile cutter or wet saw.
Step 6: Let It Set
Allow the adhesive to cure as directed — usually 24 hours.
Step 7: Apply the Grout
Remove spacers. Mix grout and press it into the joints diagonally with a rubber float. Wipe off excess with a damp sponge, and buff off the haze once dry.
Step 8: Caulk the Seams
Seal the joint between the backsplash and countertop — and any inside corners — with flexible silicone. Never grout the counter-to-wall joint.
Step 9: Clean and Seal
Clean the tiles. Seal grout (and natural stone tiles) to resist oil and stains.
Step 10: Admire Your Work
Reinstall socket covers and enjoy your new backsplash.
