Marble Etching: Everything You Need to Know

Etching is the most misunderstood issue with marble. Homeowners often see dull, light-coloured spots on their marble and assume they are stains. In fact, etching is surface damage caused by a chemical reaction. Understanding it helps you prevent it — and fix it when it happens.

What Is Marble Etching?

Marble is made of calcium carbonate (calcite). When an acid touches marble, it reacts with the calcite and dissolves a microscopic layer of the polished surface. The result is a dull, lighter, sometimes rough spot or ring. On polished marble, etching is very visible; on honed marble, it blends in more.

Is Marble a Hard Stone?

No. Marble rates about 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it soft compared with granite (6–7) or quartz. It is also chemically reactive to acids — which is the cause of etching.

Marble Maintenance Basics

  • Use pH-neutral cleaners only
  • Seal marble regularly — this helps with stains, but not etching
  • Wipe spills immediately, especially acidic ones
  • Use coasters, trays and placemats

Preventing Etching

  • Coasters under glasses of juice, cold drinks and lemon water.
  • Cutting boards for lemons, tomatoes and fruit.
  • Trays under oil, vinegar and pickle jars.
  • Honed finish: if you want marble in a kitchen, a honed finish hides etching far better than polished.
  • Educate helpers about which cleaners to avoid.

Household Items That Help Preserve Marble

  • pH-neutral stone cleaner
  • Soft microfibre cloths
  • Marble polishing powder for small repairs
  • Penetrating sealer

Household Items That Cause Etching

  • Lemon, lime and vinegar
  • Tomatoes, ketchup and imli chutney
  • Yogurt, raita and lassi
  • Cold drinks, juices and alcohol
  • Toilet cleaners and bathroom descalers
  • Some soaps, shampoos and toothpastes
  • Many "natural" cleaning recipes

Will Acidic Spills Damage Granite?

Generally no. Granite is made mostly of silicate minerals that do not react with common kitchen acids. However, frequent acid use can weaken granite's sealer.
