Marble in the Kitchen: Honest Pros and Cons

Marble kitchens look stunning in magazines and on Pinterest. In real Pakistani kitchens — with lemon, yogurt, tomatoes and tadka every day — marble needs honest consideration before you commit. Here are the real pros and cons.

Marble Is More Art than Material

Every marble slab is unique. Its veining, depth and translucence cannot be fully copied by any manufactured product. For many homeowners, owning a piece of natural art in the kitchen is worth the extra care it requires.

Pro: Marble Handles Heat Well

Marble is a natural stone that tolerates warm pans and stays cool to the touch. This makes it a traditional favourite for rolling roti, paratha dough, pastry and making sweets like barfi and chocolate.

Con: Marble Is Porous and Soft

With a hardness of about 3 on the Mohs scale, marble scratches more easily than granite or quartz. It also has pores that absorb liquids if not sealed.

Con: Marble Stains

Haldi, oil, chai and red sauces can leave marks on unsealed marble, especially light colours. Sealing every 6–12 months and prompt cleanup prevent most stains.

Con: Marble Etches

This is the biggest issue. Lemon, vinegar, tomatoes, imli, yogurt and cold drinks react with marble's calcite and leave dull spots. Sealing does not prevent etching. A honed (matte) finish hides etching much better than polished.

Pro: Marble Fits Many Budgets

Pakistani marbles such as Ziarat White, Sunny White and Botticino are affordable. Imported marbles are a luxury investment.

Pro: Marble Can Be Restored

Etches, scratches and dullness can be polished out. A marble counter can look new again after professional honing and polishing.

Should You Install Marble?

Choose marble if: you love natural patina, cook lightly, bake often, or want a statement island.

Avoid marble if: you want a spotless, unchanging surface with minimal care, or cook heavily with acidic ingredients.

The Middle Ground

Many FB Marble clients use marble on the island or baking station and granite or quartz near the stove and sink. Others choose marble-look quartz such as Calacatta Gold or Carrara White everywhere for the look without the worry.
