Natural vs Cultured Marble
Natural marble is quarried stone. Light burns are usually surface discolouration — residue or a slight change in the top layer — and can often be treated.
Cultured marble is a resin product used in many budget vanity tops. Heat can melt, blister or crack its gel coat permanently, and repairs are much harder.
Knowing which you have helps you choose the right approach.
What Causes Burn Marks?
- Hot pans, pressure cookers and tawas
- Irons placed on marble tables
- Hair straighteners and curling tongs in bathrooms
- Candles, diyas and agarbatti burning down
- Cigarettes
What Burn Damage Looks Like
Light burns appear as yellow, brown or greyish marks. Heavy burns may cause small cracks, pitting, a rough surface or a white, chalky area where the stone has been damaged.
Treating Light Burns
Hydrogen Peroxide Poultice

On light marble, mix baking soda with 6% hydrogen peroxide into a paste, apply it over the mark, cover with plastic wrap and leave overnight. This lifts many scorch discolourations.
Very Diluted Bleach (White Marble Only)
Dab a cloth with a weak bleach solution, hold it on the mark briefly, then rinse thoroughly with water. Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.
Fine Sanding and Polishing
If the surface feels rough, very gently sand with ultra-fine wet sandpaper, then restore the shine with marble polishing powder and a damp cloth.
Removing Heavy Burns
Deep burns, cracks and pitting need professional grinding, filling with colour-matched resin and re-polishing. FB Marble's restoration team in Lahore can assess the damage and advise whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Preventing Burns
- Keep trivets and heat mats beside the stove and on dining tables
- Use heat-resistant holders for hair tools in bathrooms
- Place candles and diyas on plates or stands
- Never place an iron directly on stone
