Is It a Scratch or an Etch?
A scratch is a line or groove you can sometimes feel with a fingernail. An etch is a dull spot caused by acid. Both can be polished, but etches need polishing powder, while deeper scratches may need sanding first.
Step 1: Mix Warm Water and Mild Dish Soap
Prepare a gentle cleaning solution with a few drops of colourless soap in warm water.
Step 2: Clean the Area with a Damp Cloth
Wipe the scratched area thoroughly to remove dust and grit. Any grit left on the surface will create more scratches when you buff.
Step 3: Rinse the Surface
Wipe with clean water to remove soap residue, then dry completely.
Step 4: Buff the Scratch
For very light surface scratches, buff with a dry microfibre cloth or a soft buffing pad in small circles. For slightly deeper scratches, use very fine wet sandpaper or a fine diamond hand pad — very gently and only on the scratch — to smooth the edges.
Step 5: Polish
Sprinkle marble polishing powder on the area, add a few drops of water and rub with a damp cloth or buffing pad until the shine returns. Rinse and dry.
