How to Remove a Scratch from Granite

Granite is one of the hardest countertop surfaces, so scratches are uncommon. But sand and grit, rough-bottomed ceramic pots, diamond rings and dragged appliances can occasionally leave marks โ€” especially on polished black granite, where light catches every line. Here is how to deal with them.

Polished Travertine from our stock in Lahore. Ideal for: scratch on polished granite.

Before You Begin

First check whether the mark is really a scratch. Wipe it with isopropyl alcohol and buff dry. Many "scratches" are actually metal marks from pots or residue lines that disappear with cleaning. Run your fingernail across the mark: if it doesn't catch, it is probably surface residue or a very light scratch.

Why Granite Resists Scratches

Granite is made largely of quartz and feldspar, with a hardness of about 6โ€“7 on the Mohs scale โ€” harder than steel knives. That is why everyday cutting rarely scratches it, although it will quickly blunt your knives.

Removing Light Scratches

  1. Clean the area with mild soap and water; dry completely.
  2. Apply granite polishing compound or a stone polishing powder to the scratch.
  3. Buff with a soft felt pad or microfibre cloth in small circles until the scratch fades.
  4. Clean again and inspect in good light.

Removing Deeper Scratches

Deeper scratches require progressive sanding with diamond pads โ€” for example, starting around 400โ€“800 grit and working through to 3000 grit โ€” followed by polishing. This takes skill and the right tools. Done incorrectly, it can create a dull patch larger than the original scratch. For deep scratches, especially on dark granite, professional repair is recommended.

When to Call a Professional

  • Scratches you can feel with a fingernail
  • Multiple scratches across a large area
  • Scratches on dark polished granite where any dull patch would show
  • Scratches near seams or edges

FB Marble's team uses diamond pads and polishing machines to restore the factory finish.

Preventing Scratches

  1. Use a cutting board โ€” always.
  2. Lift, don't drag heavy pots, mixers and microwaves.
  3. Wipe away grit before cleaning, especially in dusty months.
  4. Use felt pads under appliances and decorative items.
  5. Remove rings when kneading dough on the counter.
