Thickness of Granite
The most common thicknesses are:
- 18 mm โ counters on full cabinets, vanities, sills
- 20 mm โ islands, long runs, overhangs
- 30 mm โ stairs, thresholds, statement counters
How Much Does Granite Weigh?
Granite's density is about 2.6โ2.8 g/cmยณ. As a practical guide:

| Thickness | Approx. Weight per sq ft | Approx. Weight per mยฒ |
|---|---|---|
| 18 mm | 12โ13 kg | 47โ50 kg |
| 20 mm | 13โ15 kg | 52โ56 kg |
| 30 mm | 19โ22 kg | 78โ84 kg |
Example Weights
- A 10 ft ร 2 ft kitchen counter (20 sq ft) in 20 mm: roughly 260โ300 kg.
- A 6 ft ร 3 ft island (18 sq ft) in 20 mm: roughly 235โ270 kg.
- A 3 ft ร 2 ft vanity (6 sq ft) in 18 mm: roughly 72โ78 kg.
- A full slab: several hundred kilograms.
What This Means for Your Kitchen
Cabinets must be strong, level and fixed. Long spans, sink cabinets and overhangs need extra support.
Masonry counters must be fully cured and flat.
Installation needs several trained installers, proper lifting equipment and careful handling โ slabs are carried on edge to prevent snapping.
Upper floors require planning for stairs, lifts and doorways.
Walls with granite cladding need mechanical anchors, not just adhesive.
Is Granite Heavier Than Other Materials?
Granite is slightly heavier than quartz and porcelain, similar to marble and quartzite.
