A Quick Reminder: What Quartz Is
Quartz countertops are made of around 90–93% natural quartz bonded with polymer resin and pigments. The quartz provides hardness; the resin makes the surface non-porous. Most damage to quartz is damage to the resin.
1. Bleach
Concentrated bleach can discolour the resin, leaving yellow or faded patches, especially on white designs like Ice White. If you need to disinfect, use isopropyl alcohol instead.
2. Abrasive Scrubs
Steel wool, scouring powders and rough green pads create micro-scratches that dull the polish and trap dirt. Use microfibre cloths and soft sponges.
3. High-pH Cleaners
Oven cleaners, drain openers, strong degreasers and some floor cleaners are highly alkaline. They can break down the surface over time and leave permanent dull spots.
4. Low-pH (Acidic) Cleaners
Bathroom descalers, toilet acids and strong rust removers should never be used on quartz. Occasional, brief use of diluted vinegar for hard water is acceptable if rinsed immediately.
5. Strong Ammonia Products
Concentrated ammonia can dull the finish. Choose ammonia-free glass cleaners if you use them.
6. Solvents and Paint Strippers
Paint strippers containing methylene chloride and prolonged contact with acetone or nail-polish remover can damage the resin.
7. Sharp Objects
Cutting directly on quartz can leave fine marks on dark designs and will quickly blunt your knives. Always use a chopping board.
8. Direct High Heat
Hot karahis, tawas, pressure cookers, irons and hair straighteners placed directly on quartz can scorch or crack it. Keep trivets beside the stove.
9. Permanent Markers and Dyes
Marker, hair dye and mehndi can leave surface marks if left to dry. Wipe them immediately with isopropyl alcohol.
What to Use Instead
- Warm water and mild dish soap for daily cleaning
- Isopropyl alcohol (70%) for disinfecting and removing ink
- A baking-soda paste for light stains
- A plastic scraper for dried dough and gum
- Quartz-safe spray cleaners for weekly cleaning
