What Is Quartzite?

Quartzite is a metamorphic rock made almost entirely of quartz grains that have been fused together. It is one of the hardest natural stones used for countertops.

Where Does Quartzite Come From?

Quartzite forms in mountain belts around the world where sandstone has been buried deep and subjected to tectonic forces. In Pakistan, quartzite formations occur in Pakistan's northern and western mountain regions, where they are mainly used as building and aggregate stone.

How Is Quartzite Made?

  1. Sand accumulates in riverbeds, beaches or deserts.
  2. It becomes sandstone as grains are compacted and cemented together.
  3. Heat and pressure deep underground cause the quartz grains to recrystallise and grow into each other.
  4. The result is a dense rock in which the original grains and the cement between them have fused into interlocking quartz crystals.

This fusion makes quartzite much harder and less porous than sandstone.

What Gives Quartzite Its Colour?

Pure quartzite is white or grey. Minerals such as iron oxide add pink, red or gold tones; others create green, blue or taupe shades. Veins and bands form from mineral layers in the original sandstone.

Pros of Quartzite

  • Very hard and scratch-resistant (about 7 on the Mohs scale)
  • Excellent heat resistance
  • Does not etch from kitchen acids
  • UV-stable for outdoor use
  • Beautiful, marble-like natural patterns

Cons of Quartzite

  • Needs sealing, usually once a year in kitchens
  • Higher cost due to rarity and difficult fabrication
  • Edges can chip if very sharp
  • Some soft stones are mislabelled as quartzite

Where Else Can You Install Quartzite?

Beyond kitchen counters, quartzite works for floors, wall cladding, stairs, fireplace surrounds, bathroom vanities, outdoor kitchens and exterior façades.
