Does My Granite Require Sealing?
Not all granites need sealing equally:
- Light granites (Kashmir White, Snow White, Deer White): yes, about once a year.
- Medium granites: every one to two years.
- Dark, dense granites (Galaxy Black, Black Pearl): rarely โ test first.
The Water-Drop Test
- Place a few drops of water on several areas of the counter, especially near the sink and stove.
- Wait 10โ15 minutes.
- Wipe the water away.

If the stone darkened: it is absorbing water โ seal it. If the stone stayed the same: the sealer is working.
How to Seal Granite
What You Need
- Penetrating (impregnating) granite sealer
- Mild soap and water
- Lint-free cloths or foam applicator
- Gloves
Steps
- Clean: wash the counter with mild soap and water, rinse and dry.
- Wait: let it dry completely for 24 hours.
- Apply: spread the sealer evenly in small sections.
- Soak: let it penetrate for the time on the label (usually 5โ15 minutes). Keep the surface wet; add more to areas that absorb quickly.
- Wipe: remove all excess with a dry cloth before it gets tacky.
- Second coat (if needed): for porous stones, apply again.
- Cure: avoid water and heavy use for 24โ48 hours.
Why Do I Have to Seal Granite?
Granite has microscopic pores between its crystals. Sealer fills these pores so spills sit on the surface long enough for you to wipe them. Without sealing, light granites can absorb oil and spices, leaving dark or yellow marks.
Multi-Purpose Cleaners: What to Avoid
Many multi-purpose cleaners contain acids, bleach or ammonia that break down sealers. Avoid:
- Vinegar and lemon-based cleaners
- Bleach and ammonia
- Bathroom descalers
- Abrasive powders
Use mild dish soap, isopropyl alcohol diluted with water or pH-neutral stone cleaners instead.
