What Real Granite Is Like
Appearance
Real granite has three-dimensional depth, visible crystals and natural variation. Patterns never repeat exactly.
Durability
It is very hard, scratch-resistant and heat-resistant.
Maintenance
Light granites need sealing; dark granites need little.
Where Does Granite Come From?
Real granite is quarried from natural rock, in Pakistan and around the world. FB Marble stocks Pakistani granites and imports from India, Brazil, Norway, Finland and Ukraine.
What Is Fake Granite?
- Laminate printed with a granite pattern
- Cultured granite — resin with stone dust and a gel coat
- Printed tiles — ceramic or porcelain with a granite design
- Dyed granite — real stone (often a lighter or cheaper rock) treated with dye to look black or uniform
How Can You Spot Fake Granite?
Check for Repeating Patterns

Printed products repeat their pattern. Real granite does not.
Look at the Edges
On laminate and tile, the edge often reveals a different core or a printed strip. Real granite looks the same through its thickness.
Feel the Temperature
Real granite feels cold to the touch.
Tap It
Real granite sounds solid. Laminate over board sounds hollow.
Scratch Test (on a sample)
Real granite resists scratching from a steel knife; laminate and resin scratch easily.
The Acetone Test for Dyed Black Granite
Rub a hidden corner with a white cloth dampened with acetone. If the cloth turns black, the stone has been dyed. Real black granite will leave the cloth clean.
Check the Cost
If the price is far below the market, be cautious.
