Waterfall Countertops: What to Consider Before Buying

Waterfall countertops add instant modernity and drama to a kitchen or bathroom. The stone flows over the edge and down to the floor, creating a sculptural form. Before choosing one, here is what to consider.

What Is a Waterfall Countertop?

It is a countertop where the stone continues vertically down one or both ends of the cabinet to the floor, joined at the top corner with a precise 45-degree mitre. When the slab is veined, the pattern appears to flow continuously over the edge.

Things to Consider

Space Available

Waterfall islands look best in spacious kitchens where the island can be viewed from several angles. In small kitchens, a single waterfall end may be more suitable than a double.

Design Aesthetic

Waterfalls suit modern and minimalist designs. In very traditional kitchens, a classic edge may be more harmonious.

Material Choice

Vein Matching

To achieve a continuous flow, the top and vertical panels should be cut from the same slab in sequence.

Applications

  • Kitchen islands
  • Peninsulas and breakfast bars
  • Bathroom vanities
  • Reception desks
  • Bar counters
  • TV units and consoles

Price

Waterfall countertops require extra stone for vertical panels plus skilled mitering and installation. They cost more than standard edges.

Floor Level

The floor must be finished and level before templating so the vertical panel sits perfectly.

Durability

The bottom edge of vertical panels can chip if furniture or vacuum cleaners hit it — slightly eased corners help.
