Black Granite Kitchen Ideas: Galaxy Black, Black Pearl and More

Black granite is the toughest, most forgiving counter you can put in a busy kitchen. The trick is choosing the right black, because not all black granites look or behave the same.

Dark granite hides stains, shrugs off heat and looks sharp against white, wood or grey cabinets. That is why it remains the most popular kitchen counter in Pakistan. But "black granite" covers a range of stones, from flat jet-black to stones with gold, silver or blue sparkle. Here are the ones we recommend most, how to style them, and a step-by-step way to pick the right black for your kitchen.

Galaxy Black: black with gold sparkle

Galaxy Black is an Indian granite with small gold bronzite flecks that catch light like stars. It looks best on islands under pendant lights. Estimated rate: Rs 1,600 โ€“ 1,800 per sq ft. Pair it with matte white or light grey cabinets and brass or black handles.

Black Pearl: the value favourite

Black Pearl is a Pakistani granite with fine silver-grey specks. It gives a rich dark counter at a lower rate of around Rs 1,100 โ€“ 1,300 per sq ft. It is also a strong choice for stairs, as shown in our staircase guide.

Impala Black: the budget workhorse

Impala Black is an even, fine-grained dark grey-black Pakistani granite at roughly Rs 400 โ€“ 450 per sq ft. It is widely used for kitchens, window sills and, with a flamed finish, for porches and outdoor steps.

Titanium Black and Forest Black: deepest black

If you want an almost solid black, look at Titanium Black (ultra-dark with silver flecks) or Indian Forest Black. These suit minimal, high-contrast kitchens. A leather finish on very dark granite hides fingerprints better than polish; see our finishes guide.

Black granites with colour

For something different, Blue Pearl (Norwegian, blue-silver shimmer), Uba Tuba (Brazilian green-black with gold) and Antique Labradorite (black with blue-teal flashes) give a dark counter that changes with the light.

What you need to plan a black granite kitchen

  • your cabinet colour and handle finish, or samples of both
  • a note of your lighting: daylight, pendants, under-cabinet strips
  • your counter measurements in feet
  • a preferred finish: polished or leather
  • a budget range for the slab

Choosing your black granite: step by step

Step 1: Decide how much sparkle you want

Start with the character of the stone. Flat, deep blacks such as Titanium Black and Forest Black give a calm, minimal look. Black Pearl and Impala Black have a fine speckle that reads dark from a distance. Galaxy Black, Blue Pearl, Uba Tuba and Antique Labradorite bring gold, blue or green flashes that become a feature in their own right.

Step 2: Check the stone under your own lighting

The gold in Galaxy Black shows up best under warm light, while blue stones flash more under cool white light. Many kitchens in Lahore houses run on artificial light for long hours, so look at the slab under light similar to yours. Under-cabinet LED strips make sparkle stones come alive.

Step 3: Pick polished or leather

Polished black granite looks deep and glossy but shows water spots and fingerprints. A leather finish hides them better and suits busy kitchens, especially where hard water leaves marks around the sink.

Step 4: Set your budget

Impala Black is the most economical, Black Pearl sits in the middle, and Galaxy Black and the imported coloured stones cost more. Our granite price guide explains what else goes into a full quote.

Step 5: See the actual slab

Granite varies between slabs, especially stones with crystals and flecks. Check the slab that will be cut for your kitchen before you confirm the order.

Styling ideas

  • Classic contrast: Galaxy Black counter, white cabinets, white or light grey backsplash.
  • Warm modern: Black Pearl counter with walnut or oak cabinets and brass fittings.
  • All-dark luxury: Titanium Black with charcoal cabinets and warm under-cabinet LED strips.
  • Two-tone: black granite on the cooking run, white quartz on the island.

Why black granite suits a desi kitchen

A kitchen that turns out chai, parathas and a karahi most days asks a lot of a counter. Black granite handles heat from pots well, although a trivet is still good practice. Haldi, ghee and tea stains that would worry you on a light counter are much less visible on a dark one. Granite generally does not etch, but acids such as lemon and vinegar weaken the sealer, so wipe them up rather than leaving them to sit. In summer heat, oil spreads further when spilt, and a dark counter keeps those marks out of sight until you wipe them.

Choosing a backsplash for a black counter

A black counter gives you a lot of freedom with the wall above it. White or light grey tiles keep the kitchen bright and let a sparkle stone such as Galaxy Black stand out. A full-height splashback in white quartz creates a crisp two-tone look and is easy to wipe after tadka splatters. With Black Pearl or Uba Tuba on warm wood cabinets, a cream or beige backsplash keeps the scheme soft. If the kitchen is small or gets little daylight, keep the backsplash light so the room does not feel closed in.

Black granite beyond the kitchen

The same stones work well around the rest of the house. Black Pearl is a strong choice for stairs, Impala Black suits window sills and, flamed, porches and outdoor steps, and Galaxy Black makes a striking dining table top. Using one black granite in several places ties the interior together.

Living with a black counter

Black granite is low-maintenance, but polished dark surfaces show water spots and fingerprints. Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth and a little pH-neutral cleaner, then dry. Avoid vinegar, lemon and bleach-based sprays, which can dull the polish over time.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving water to dry on polished black. Hard water leaves white rings. Wipe and dry the area around the sink.
  • Cleaning with vinegar or lemon. They weaken the sealer and can dull the polish. Use a pH-neutral cleaner.
  • Choosing sparkle from a photo. Flecks and flashes look different in person and change with lighting.
  • Pairing a busy stone with a busy backsplash. Let either the counter or the backsplash be the feature, not both.
  • Dark counters with dark cabinets and poor lighting. An all-dark kitchen needs good under-cabinet lighting to work well.
