Polished, Honed, Leather or Flamed? Choosing the Right Stone Finish
The same stone can look glossy, soft and matte, or rough and rustic, depending on the finish. The finish also changes grip, cleaning and how marks show.

Choosing a stone is only half the decision. The surface finish changes how it looks, how it feels underfoot, and how it behaves day to day. The same slab of marble or granite can look glossy and deep, soft and matte, or textured and rustic. This guide explains the main finishes we supply, where each one makes sense, and then walks you step by step through choosing the right finish for every area of your home.
What you need to consider
- Where the stone will go: floor, wall, counter, stairs or outdoors.
- Whether the surface will get wet, and how often.
- Who uses the space: small children, elderly parents, guests.
- How much daily wiping and care you are happy to do.
- Which stone you have chosen, because not every finish suits every stone.
Polished
A mirror-like shine that brings out the full colour and depth of the stone. This is the standard finish for most marble and granite.
- Best for: lounges, drawing rooms, feature walls, kitchen counters.
- Watch out for: slipperiness when wet; on marble, etch marks from acids show clearly as dull spots.
Polished stone reflects light, which helps a drawing room or entrance feel bright and formal. It is also the easiest finish to wipe clean, because there is no texture to hold dust. The trade-off is that every mark shows: a lemon squeezed over salad on a polished marble counter can leave a dull ring.
Honed
A smooth, matte surface without the shine. Colours look softer and lighter.
- Best for: bathrooms, kitchens with marble, stairs, modern minimal interiors.
- Why choose it: better grip than polished, and etch marks on marble are much less visible.
- Note: a honed surface is slightly more open, so seal it well.

Honed marble suits busy family kitchens where haldi, ghee and chai are part of daily cooking, because the matte surface disguises small etch marks. Seal it well so oil and spices cannot soak in.
Leather
A soft, textured surface with a slight sheen, made by brushing the stone. It feels like fine leather to the touch.
- Best for: dark granite counters like Titanium Black or absolute black.
- Why choose it: hides fingerprints and water spots much better than polish.
Hard water leaves white spots that show clearly on polished black granite. A leather finish hides them far better, which makes it a practical choice for kitchens in cities where the tap water is hard.
Flamed
A rough, textured surface made by heating granite. It is the go-to finish for outdoors.
- Best for: porches, driveways, outdoor steps, pool surrounds.
- Why choose it: excellent grip in rain. Works on granite such as Impala Black, not on marble.
Tumbled and brushed
Used mainly on travertine. Tumbled pieces have rounded, aged edges for a rustic look, and brushed stone has a gentle texture. Both suit patios, pool decks and courtyards. See the travertine guide.
Finishes compared
| Finish | Look | Grip when wet | Shows marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polished | Glossy, deep colour | Low | Etches and water spots show clearly |
| Honed | Matte, softer colour | Better | Etches much less visible |
| Leather | Textured, slight sheen | Better | Hides fingerprints and water spots |
| Flamed | Rough, natural | Excellent | Hides dust and wear |
| Tumbled or brushed | Rustic, aged | Good | Hides wear |
Step 1: List every area
Write down each surface that will get stone, and note whether it is indoors or outdoors, wet or dry, and walked on or not. A lounge floor, a shower floor and a porch need three different answers, even if you use the same family of stone throughout.
Step 2: Match the finish to the area
| Area | Recommended finish |
|---|---|
| Lounge and drawing room floors | Polished |
| Bathroom floors and showers | Honed |
| Stairs | Honed, or polished with anti-slip grooves |
| Kitchen counters (granite) | Polished or leather |
| Kitchen counters (marble) | Honed |
| Porch, driveway, outdoor steps | Flamed granite |
| Pool deck, patio | Tumbled or brushed travertine |
Step 3: Think about safety
Any floor that gets wet needs grip. That includes bathrooms, kitchens where water splashes from the sink, stairs, and every outdoor surface during the monsoon. If elderly family members or small children live in the house, lean towards honed, leather or textured finishes on floors, and keep high gloss for walls and dry rooms.
Step 4: Plan for care
- Polished: wipe spills quickly, especially acids on marble. Use a pH-neutral cleaner.
- Honed: seal well, as the surface is slightly more open, and reseal when water stops beading.
- Leather and flamed: sweep or brush to lift dust from the texture, then mop.
- Tumbled and brushed travertine: seal outdoors and rinse off pool water and garden mud.

Step 5: Decide before you order
Can a finish be changed later? Often, yes. A polished marble floor can be honed on site, and a dull floor can be re-polished. Flamed and leather finishes are done at the factory, so decide on those before ordering. Not every finish is available on every stone, so check with us for the specific slab you like.
Ask to see a sample in each finish you are considering. The same stone can look surprisingly different polished and honed, and it helps to see both in daylight before you commit.
Step 6: Mix finishes with purpose
You do not have to use one finish throughout a room. Mixing finishes of the same stone is a simple way to add interest while keeping the colour consistent.
- Kitchen: a leather-finish granite counter with a polished backsplash in the same stone. The counter hides fingerprints, and the backsplash reflects light around the room.
- Bathroom: polished marble on the walls with a honed floor in the same marble. The walls stay glossy and easy to wipe, while the floor gives grip.
- Stairs: polished risers with honed treads, so the staircase shines from below but stays safe to walk on.
- Porch and steps: flamed granite on the ground and polished granite on the pillars and boundary wall.
Keep the same stone and lot when you mix finishes. The change in texture then looks deliberate, rather than like two different stones that do not quite match.
Common mistakes
- High-gloss polish on a bathroom or shower floor, which is slippery when wet.
- Polished marble in a busy kitchen, where acid etch marks show clearly.
- Forgetting to seal a honed surface, which is slightly more open than polished.
- Polished stone on outdoor steps and porches, where flamed granite stays grippy in rain.
- Expecting a flamed finish on marble. Flaming works on granite, not on marble.
- Choosing a leather or flamed finish after ordering, when these are done at the factory.
- Judging a finish from a photo instead of a real sample.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between polished and honed marble?
Polished marble is glossy and reflects light; honed marble is smooth and matte. Honed gives better grip and hides etch marks better, while polished shows more colour depth.
Is honed marble harder to maintain?
Honed marble is slightly more open, so seal it well. It hides etching and scratches better than polished marble.
What is a leather finish on granite?
A brushed, softly textured surface with a slight sheen. It hides fingerprints and water spots better than a polished finish.
Which finish is best for outdoor floors?
Flamed granite is best for porches, driveways and steps. Tumbled or brushed travertine suits pool decks and patios.
Can I change the finish of my marble floor later?
Often, yes. A polished marble floor can be honed on site, and a dull floor can be re-polished. Flamed and leather finishes are done at the factory, so choose those before ordering.
Which finish is best for a granite kitchen counter?
Polished or leather. Leather is especially practical on dark granite, because it hides fingerprints and hard-water spots better than a high gloss.
